Napoleon and the French Grande Armée have retreated from the disastrous Russian campaign a year ago. Having retreated to Paris, Napoleon is in the process of raising a huge conscript army. Although the Prussians were allied to France during the campaign in Russia, they have now moved to an alliance with Russia, Austria and Sweden. Britain is also part of this alliance, but its aid is mainly restricted to finance and the provision of artillery.
This is a game of high command – both military and political – of a major Napoleonic campaign. For senior command, warfare was a game of manoeuvre and co-ordinating forces to achieve victory through concentration of forces to oppose a weaker opponent. The politics of high command was about making the most of the battlefield situation to prepare for the negotiations after victory or trying to hold territory if defeated.
This is a typical hierarchical megagame and provides an immersive experience of military and political command.
